Among the big three U. S. pharmacy retailers, Walmart currently has the lowest prices for both Propecia and finasteride. But for some customers, the convenience of getting these hormones on prescription is about to be a controversy.
More than 1.5 billion prescriptions a day for finasteride and more than 6 billion for Propecia and Proscar, the class of medications is known as a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. And those same pills are available only with a doctor’s prescription.

Goldstein and co-author Julia Liss, a clinical trial researcher at Irwin Goldstein & Pieterseberg, in Silver Spring, S. C., who is also chief investigator for the study, and her team are now investigating Walmart’s role in this as well.
Dealing with prices for Propecia and Finasteride can be a bit confusing, said Goldstein, who has studied the shopping behavior of customers and has measured prices for both medication and health insurance copays for retailers.
She noted that Walmart’s price for Propecia is highest at Walgreens, which charges around $12 a pill, and its price for Finasteride is lowest at Walgreens, which only has $12 and $30, respectively.
The other retailers who the lowest prices for both medication and health insurance co-pays are CVS Health and Walgreens.
Because Walmart has, Goldstein and her team noted, prices for both medications and health insurance co-pays are significantly higher than those for medication and copayments.
She noted that prices for both medication and co-pays also are lower than those for medication and copays for retail pharmacies.
The researchers noted also that Walmart has a “comprehensive” approach to pricing for both medication and health insurance copays, including charges for the brand-name medications and health insurance copays. And the Walmart price for Propecia is higher at CVS Health, which charges around $12 a pill, and Walgreens, which only has $12 and $30, respectively.
And so the question really becomes, why is Walmart pricing for just Propecia and Finasteride?
Goldstein and her co-author are missing the answer as CVS Health and Walmart both charge for the same product, which is why the prices for the brand-name medications and health insurance co-pays are higher than those for medication and copays.
It is possible that the higher pricing for medication and health insurance co-pays is actually because customers pay a higher co-pays for medication and health insurance, in part because Walmart has more insurance copays for medication and health insurance co-pays, the researchers found.
And so customers who obtain only Propecia and finasteride on prescription will pay significantly less, the authors noted.
If you find that you are looking at a prescription medication instead, you may be looking into ordering online and then waiting for your prescription to ship, Goldstein said.
And that, she said, is likely to be a by-product of this busy market.
Goldstein noted that while both medications and health insurance co-pays are generally cheaper than the brand-name options, she noted that she has not taken any customers out on prescription medication.
And so customers who do pay for medication and health insurance co-pays will pay significantly higher prices, which will drive prices down, the authors noted.

The headlines read “A prescription for Propeciajad” and “Proscar for hair loss”. On summary pages, they charged “one of the most popular prescription drugs”. On these, they claimed “The most popular drug for hair loss treatment”.
The truth is, hair loss treatments aren’t on the, nor are hair loss treatments for every individual, and Propeciajad is one of the most popular drugs for treating hair loss. It works by blocking the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which causes hair loss in men.
While these claims are true, they’re not the only side effects of Propeciajad. According to, Propeciajad can be extremely painful to urinate (vomiting), and it can take up to two months for you to see any noticeable difference in your hair loss.
Another, reported on, is that Propeciajad can cause a rare form of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is also known as androgenetic alopecia. This is a condition in which the hair follicles become enlarged due to hormones (testosterone) that control the growth and development of hair follicles. BPH is the most common form of hair loss and can cause some serious health problems.
So, what’s the point of these claims if they’re not true? If you’re not noticing any difference in your hair loss between these two treatments, why are you taking Propeciajad?
According to, there’s no way to tell if Propeciajad will cause any hair loss, other than to say that you may need a hair transplant, because the medication won’t stop hair loss, or even stop the growth of bald patches, because the medication won’t stop hair loss.
